I think in a way, there are a lot of things about Shaw that is constant in whatever 'verse she's in.

John and Root were similar in a lot of ways because their drive and purpose are brought about by external influences, for Shaw her drive and purpose is self-directed.

In my opinion, post-season 5 Shaw would have continued to make sure that any surviving Samaritan cell would be eradicated, she would do that with or without the Machine.

I would like to think she would go back to the Johannesburg prison and help free Samuel and his friends because she owes him and that building needs to be burned to the ground.

Along the way, I would also like to think that she'd save Control much to Control's chagrin and grudging respect. Agent Shaw was always her best operator.

If the Machine hadn't returned I don't think Shaw would work the Numbers of the Week, at least not the way she would with the help of the Machine. She'd help people who needed help when comes across them, or maybe Burn Notice style, with the people she helped before telling them about the mysterious woman with a dog who saved them.

She would continue what she did best and fighting the good fight because that's who she was, a straight arrow.

I'm connecting this to the previous prompt for [personal profile] netgirl_y2k.

  • After a year, I think Shaw does have help because even when she has The Machine | Root, it's still not the same as having a hacker on scene. Shaw is okay with computers but she's no hacker.
  • She does work with Fusco and Zoe, after everything she's taking tabs on them. She's not going to lose any more people if she can help it. Dani is also brought on as a consultant when Fusco is forced to retire from NYPD.
  • The hacker, let's call her Rachel is someone who worked for an anonymous group of hackers that was bent on investigating the weird and catastrophic events that led to ICE 9 virus. They stand against AIs, Rachel's group goes to ground when a mysterious group targets them, fortunately for Rachel the Machine | Root tagged her as a potential asset and set Shaw as her neighbor.
  • Rachel and Shaw start working together but Shaw's aloof, more so than usual. She had a team and a family and it will take a while for Shaw to let anyone close again.
  • Rachel thinks Shaw is a scary superhero, and Rachel doesn't trust the person ('Root'? Pretentious much!) Shaw keeps arguing with over comms. Needless to say, Rachel isn't pleased to learn that Shaw's actually working with an AI.
  • Gen contacts Shaw and Rachel mistakenly thought Gen is Shaw's daughter. Both Gen and Shaw balk at that.
  • "How rich are you?!" Rachel blurts out after Shaw pulls off a really expensive takeover.
Shaw paused, as if she's actually thinking about it and then admits, "I don't really know."
  • Rachel thinks Zoe is awesome and that Zoe is Shaw's girlfriend, Zoe only laughs at this. Then Kelly comes along.
  • Rachel realizes Shaw is in a strange relationship with an AI with seeming multiple personalities.
  • The Machine | Root enjoys scaring the crap out of Rachel. Rachel threatens to quit at least once.
  • Fusco: "It's like she (Rachel) is the daughter you and cocoa puffs never had."
Shaw: "I'm going to shoot you."

I wonder if Shaw ever looks back at her career and how different her life was from how she pictured it.

I think if Relevance hadn't happened Shaw would be perfectly fine doing her job and working for Hersh and Control (as evidenced by the AU episode). She didn't have a problem with their methods nor their management style until they made it into a problem.

I actually think she preferred Hersh's or Control's style over Harold's soft touch approach to action but one thing she does prefer with Harold is, that with Harold she's sure even if they disagree there won't be a bullet with her name on it.

I thought about this AU and I realized I don't think this can be a complete AU swap considering her state of mind during the events of Revenge of the Sith and who she is. Here’s what I think an AU of this would look like, I hope it’s okay it’s not exactly what the prompt requested:

At the start of RoTS it would've been a few months (year?) since Ahsoka walked away from the Jedi Order and Ahsoka was disillusioned but she still helped the Jedi when she could.

Namely when she helped organize a resistance against Darth Maul (guy has more lives than a cat) in Mandalore. Ahsoka went toe to toe against Maul and if Order 66 hadn't been activated, she would have captured him.

So if we diverge from the moment Rex (Anakin's loyal right-hand man in the 501st) faked both his and Ahsoka's death the AU can start before Ahsoka goes into self-imposed exile, somehow Ahsoka managed to intercept a message from Obi-Wan about Padme's condition, and the rendezvous point at Polis Massa.Read more... )

My little spy family! I am not lying when I say the ISA part of Person of Interest was my jam! I love the Activity! And because of that love, I share Shaw's slight (not so slight?) bias against the CIA.

In my opinion, the best operators from the CIA were Kara and John and that's it. I wasn't impressed at the CIA folk in season 5.

Meanwhile, I love everyone from the Activity and squee'd whenever they appeared! Samaritan shutting down the Activity saddened me and in retaliation in all my post-season 5 headcanons Shaw always rescues Control from a Samaritan controlled black site and helps her get the Activity up and running again.

"You have a brilliant mind, Sameen, and you're very gifted but you'll never be a doctor."

As a doctor, Sameen Shaw was exceptional.

I think one of the things fanon forgets about Shaw is how smart Shaw is, she pretends to be a 'grunt' but she isn't. She loves to tease the whole team about being nerds but she's as much as a nerd as anyone in the team. Her skill set is broad and varied but one thing we have canonical proof of is Shaw was a brilliant doctor, more than brilliant she was gifted.

You don't just say that to anyone.

Unfortunately, her brusque bedside manner didn't play well with the patients and with time I sort of understood why Shaw was reprimanded but at the same time, I look at other popular male doctors who are as or worse than Shaw.

If Shaw did her residency in Seattle Grace I think she'd fit with Cristina Yang, and I'm wondering now if Shaw had a Bailey as a mentor would things have gone differently for Shaw because I think Shaw responds well to authority figures who pushed her to be better but also rein her in when she needs to be reined in.

If things had continued I think Shaw would do well as a surgeon maybe, even a neurosurgeon or maybe she'd be a brilliant trauma surgeon because of how well she can operate under pressure. The higher the stakes, the better Shaw shines.

But I wonder if the lifestyle would suit her down the road, we know that Shaw also likes work that gives her a bit of adrenaline, maybe in her off days (when she has them) she'd be the type to do extreme sports.

If she did join the navy so the Navy will pay for her medical school maybe she'd be deployed overseas right in the thick of the action.

Unfortunately, Shaw didn't have a mentor who could have guided her properly and just when her star was rising, she was booted out of the medical program and her life changed forever.

My old staple I keep coming back to is Life but most recently it's Leverage, Burn Notice, and The West Wing.

(I love spy stories, heists, and police procedurals. I also love ensembles with really smart people and I keep hoping re-watching all of the above will rub off on my writing and I can piece together how to write a case fic.)

But Life is the one I keep coming back to especially season 1 because it was such a gentle and kind show about two broken people who learn to find grace. It's a noir that's filled with light, and the show loves Los Angeles so much, as much as Dani Reese and Charlie Crews loves Los Angeles.

For movies: I keep coming back to Gosford Park partly because of the upstairs/downstairs dynamic and a lot because of how it was filmed like it was an ongoing theater with the added bonus of a Golden Aged Detective mystery. I love picking up the details I missed the first time I saw the movie.

For books, I tend to go back to Diana Wynne Jones books but recently in place of novels I've turned more and more to reading fanfic. I like Nomad's West Wing Further to Fly series. I'm amazed at how Nomad was able to write something so similar to TWW style plot and dialogue and made it an ensemble. It's gen with some romantic relationships but the dynamic is all about the ensemble and the politics. Each story flows and builds into the next. I hope to write a long multi-chaptered gen story like this one day.

My favorite vacation was probably the one I took with my family a few years ago, it was my first trip to Europe and it was amazing and fun. We went around Spain, Italy, and a bit of France.

I love crossovers, like a lot. I love smooshing of my favorite shows and characters together, and see how they'd react.

It's like watching dominos fall except I don't know the outcome! Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Although reading crossovers is more fun that way!

One of my least favorite things about crossovers is how the characters suddenly become out of character, or you have a sneaking suspicion the only reason why they wrote the crossover is to show how superior the characters from the other show is. There is no equal amount of awesome going around.

Also, there are just some shows that are easy to be... as they used to say, the black dress of crossovers i.e., Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, the Stargate franchise, and it's not limited to sci-fi/fantasy, I've seen Criminal Minds in a lot of crossovers.

And, I love reading people react to Buffy, the SG teams, the Criminal Minds team or the Criminal Minds team reacting to the other characters in a different show.

Thoughts on if Shaw was in an AU where robots/synthetics had a prominent and humanoid-esque presence (which would be plenty of video games, tv shows, and also Terminator)? you can factor in her pre-Team Machine or post-whichever works for you. Would she consider robots that look like humans to be alive? does she think being sentient equates being alive? Do robots have a soul? Does she think The Machine has a soul? Samaritan?

The first thing I thought reading this was Westworld more than Terminator, not only for the Nolan connection and because of how easy it is I think WW could have sprung from POI but also, because, it's freshest in her mind.

possible spoilers to Westworld )

I don't know if she believes in souls but she believes in standing up to bullies, there is a reason why Shaw is called a straight arrow.

This a really interesting question!

And I swear I had an answer for this... a few months ago but now I can’t remember! I do know that I would love a story about all my favorites in one story!

Like a a League of Extraordinary Gentlemen except the team is composed of Buffy Summers, Aeryn Sun, Dani Reese, Sameen Shaw (yes they look alike, it freaks Dani out), etc., and all the other favorites banding together to save the world/fight crime.

I would like it to be a series of fun adventures, with an epic arc, excellent character development, and team bonding!

How did Belle put it? "Far off places, daring sword fights, magic spells, a prince/princesses in disguise!”

This took me a lot longer to answer because it really forced me to think what I'd want in a sixth season of Person of Interest, like if I had the energy to write a virtual season or even a wish list for what a sixth season would look like:

  • Exploring the world Harold Finch left behind, a little like what happened in Mr. Robot season 2 but this time from a point of view of the hackers who are waking up to the prospect that something really weird happened. Conspiracy theories abound: About the missile that hit downtown New York, about the mysterious billboard messages in Time's Square.
  • Weird things keep popping up, whispers about a prison in Johannesburg that was discovered to run illegal tests on people, and a possible emergent AI. One group, in particular, is running around proclaiming the Robot Overlords have arrived, they hack people and play Robin Hood.
  • Exploration of Sameen Shaw as both Primary Asset and Primary Analog Interface, and the mysterious leader of Team Machine, International (ala Leverage Inc, International) but Shaw doesn't interfere unless she needs to. She only steps in when it's needed, mostly she's okay running her own missions, primarily making sure Samaritan hold outs are taken out.

Person of Interest is in my top Forever Shows, fun fact Sarah Shahi is in two shows I consider my Forever Shows!

I love the show, the show gave me a host of compelling characters both good and bad, and all shades of gray. They have a lot of women who are varied and awesome, and not everyone needed to know how to use a gun to be awesome.

I think as a whole though it told a really amazing story about people who are introverts, loners, damaged people who needed a second chance. They formed into an odd family/team but they worked and often under the guidance of an AI that was also coming to its own.

I also love how the show doesn’t put romantic love as the golden standard, more often than not friendship is as important and sought after as a romantic connection.

And, I love that when the show did focus on the romance, it didn’t focus on it to the exclusion of everything else. Characters are allowed to have plot and history beyond their romance (well, not everyone Grace, unfortunately, is there for Harold but it’s Carrie Preston’s acting the elevated Grace. Iris’s character doesn’t have that).

But I would be lying if I say Person of Interest was perfect there. There are no perfect shows, and POI stumbled a lot, and sometimes they got too enamored with their ideas. Particularly in season 5 with all the constraints of the network and possibly (after watching Westworld) influenced by Westworld’s storylines a wee too much.
(It’s a revelation watching Westworld with Person of Interest in the forefront of my mind because there were moments when I went-- oh, that’s why they did that in POI.)

But in the end, this is the show that gave me Shaw, Root, Harold, Carter, John, Fusco, Zoe Morgan, and Bear, and their occasionally quirky, mysterious AI guardian. I will always be thankful for the show because of that.

This is a holdover from pre-tumblr fandom when (at least for me) there was a degree to shipping.

A couple I ship together doesn’t automatically get the One True Pairing title for me because they have to be a One True Pair-- the ship I ship above all else. Two characters, no matter the circumstance I see will always be right for each other.

Sometimes a ship never rises to OTP levels, but that’s okay, epic love is not the end all and be all. I also love the concept of the love after true love pairings, a concept I owe to The OC.

Then, there’s the golden OTP to end All OTPs, the few OTPairings that rise above all else, in any universe, multiverse they will always be together and mostly these pairings were formed during my formative years: Lois and Clark, Elizabeth and Darcy.

(I still can’t forgive that one show where a Superfan entered the book and ends up with Darcy, also she had more chemistry with Wickham.)

I love Fullmetal Alchemist, both versions! Although not the movie versions of the first FMA.

Hiromu Arakawa wrote FMA so well and with so many amazing characters! She wrote so many awesome women in the story. And I love how the worldbuilding made so much sense the world's system of magic was really inventive!

I love the concept of Equivalent Exchange and the consequences that comes with it, Equivalent Exchange embodied the phrase: 'all magic comes with a price'.

I also love all the relationships in the show and how, at the end of the day Roy and Riza know they can't really atone for the atrocities they commited against the Ishvalan people, all they can do to move forward is to take steps that it won't happen again.

I love the relationship between Ed and Alphonse. I love how they're all badass in their own way, and I love that this story isn't your average shounen story where the protagonist only cared about the next fight to prove they were strong and skilled.

Ed and Al worked toward a goal that made sense to who they were.

Arakawa deserves all the awards!
