Fringe - 3x03: The Plateau
First, let me get this out of the way: ANNA TOOOORV! Honestly, how awesome is she?
This episode was fantastic, so was the case of the week because the antagonist and his relationship with his sister were very poignant. Milo seemed like an almost Observer with the way he acted and thought and I wonder if that's the start of Observers? After all, time means nothing to them.
Then the final scene where the sister holds his hand and for a second we think he's back but then he's gone again and Olivia watching from the outside, it killed me. Honestly, that's the sort of Case of the Week I like.
I've always had a soft spot for these probability kind of episodes. It's fantastic to see everything fall into place. The moment Olivia spots the ballpoint pen and then Milo? Fantastic. Although if the Linc-Olivia mind meld is to be believed then it seems altOlivia also has some pattern recognition skills same as our Olivia.
Thing the second, OLIVIA! I missed her so much! I like alt!Livia and all but Our Olivia is still the best Olivia for me. Even if she was being alt!Olivia she was still our Olivia!
How does Anna Torv keep it straight in her head? She doesn't even have to say anything to convey which Olivia she's playing! There's just this haunted look in Olivia's eyes even if she is acting like alt!Olivia it never goes away.
There was a moment and a beat during the scene where Olivia talked about Rachel then acknowledging that she lost her. There was so much grief there for her lost sister and then Olivia stops completely, as if she knows there is a wrongness to that statement and it's because inside she knows Rachel isn't dead. I love those character moments. Yes, Peter and Walter appear in her head but the writers don't forget that Olivia also has another important relationship in her life and that is with her sister and by extension, Ella.
Olivia doesn't live in a bubble and her support group aren't limited to the people she work with.
Also, you know what I missed? Olivia being assertive. Olivia taking action, making decisions and doing reckless things for the sake of accomplishing her tasks. Not to disparge on alt!Olivia, I liked her putting Newton in his place but the way she stood back in the Fringe Division scenes last episode was kind of a 'huh' moment for me, especially when she didn't volunteer going to the tracks first to disable the bomb.
It would still be Peter doing the whole cutting the wires thing, of course but Olivia will always volunteer first before handing the job to another person. So, that was a distraction that alt!Olivia let someone else take the job without comment.
But then alt!Olivia ran to save Peter and tackled him to a wall and that was awesome too!
Olivia may looked buttoned down but she'll break the rules to get the job done while alt!Olivia may look like rebel but she's more prone to following the rules than creating them.
Thing three: CHARLIE! Oh, Charlie how I've missed you and man, in whatever 'verse you still do know Olivia, you might have never have kissed her but you know her and that is just fantastic.
Charlie berating Olivia on her recklessness and his obvious care for her was aces.
I know it's part perception but... Peter is looking bad in comparison to Charlie but I guess since Linc is blind to the differences in our Olivia and alt Olivia Linc is the Peter analog in the Other Side.
My greatest hope is that alt!Charlie doesn't die because it would be a sadder 'verse without a Charlie!
(Sidebar: Someone mentioned in LJ how Linc is the Peter analog in the Other Side and the dynamic in alt!Fringe team is what would happen if John were alive and its kind of interesting take especially learning that Linc kissed alt!Olivia.)
Thing four: I like Frank. I like Frank a whole lot better than John Scott. He is a virologist and saves lives! Also, I noticed both Olivias have a difficult time replying to heart felt confessions of love.
I wonder if alt!Olivia and Frank's relationship is always this... I don't know if I should call it quiet but... there's a quietness and sort of gentleness in our Olivia and Frank's scenes which are a different tone from the playfulness we saw in the real alt!Olivia and Frank relationship. Or, perhaps it is because Frank is walking on egg shells with Olivia but he didn't seem put off about Olivia acting like that.
Although he now knows something is up with Olivia.
This leads me to another question, in reference to the season premiere, why would alt!Olivia need to have a safe house? Not a literal safe house but a metaphorical one? Why would she call her mother's house 'her safe house'?
Thing five: Alt!Astrid! And her little hat! It was a nice touch for Olivia to notice that Astrid had something to say when she discovered another accident.
Thing six: Was that an emotion on Walternate's face? There was grief on his face at seeing Peter's clothes quickly tucked away. How strange that essentially Olivia an Walternate traded places, where one is button up, the other is more loose. Still, Walternate calling the world his lab? Chilling.
Is it bad of me to say I want to keep watching Olivia on the Other Side than watching our original Fringe universe?I find these Other Side episodes more compelling to watch especially watching our Olivia deal with what's happening to her.
Apologies if I'm incoherent, I'm very punch drunk from sleepiness. It's 4AM here and I'm still awake!

Summary: Olivia Dunham fights every last damn thing in the world(s).
Fantastic Fringe vid and Olivia-centric to boot! I loved the beginning and fits so well with the video in and out of context.
ETA: Edited to be more sense making!
