January 14 - “meta on how redemption arcs are handled in The Good Place so far.”

I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve fallen behind watching The Good Place, so fair warning! What I like about redemption in story (not the Good|Bad Place itself) is that even terrible people can have a shot of redemption, if they want it, and if they work at it.
I love that the message of the show seems to be that changing and becoming a good person is never too late, heck the whole main cast are dead and the other is a millennia’s old demon! And, most of all I love that while Chidi’s teachings help out, its actually helping each other, becoming friends, and caring for each other is the part that help them to become better.
I love that Eleanor started her arc because she realized how (medium) terrible she was in life and to other people and even as we delve into her backstory and realize why she was the way she was but the show never makes it an excuse. And, Eleanor becoming a good person isn’t a quick fix. Just as Chidi’s inability to commit to anything but his ethics is not easily remedied, or even Tahani’s or Jason’s. Although, I would love more of Tahani and Jason’s character development to be more visible too.
Overall, I like how they’re handling it, especially for a comedy series where it could have gone too broad and cutesy. The show handles their redemption arcs with surprisingly light touch! Thank you, Mike Schur and team!
