A yellow crayon event

One of the things I love about this episode is how it highlights Olivia's relationship to her mother. Peter's familial relationship is seen through the lens of Walter-Peter with Peter's mother almost never mentioned, which is understandable since Walter is the one we meet.

I've wondered about Peter's mother and found Elizabeth Bishop, both versions interesting upon meeting her/them and was saddened by how easily Peter leapt back Over Here without even considering his real mother.

And then to my surprise we see this powerful mother-daughter scene in the season premiere and it just... It broke my heart and satisfied me at the same time because we finally have a significant relationship between a mother and her child in Dunham!Mom and Olivia.

Via Fringe Bloggers I found this video of Anna Torv talking about the latest episode of Fringe and I feel validated that the way Anna played Olivia was how I interpreted the scene.

The expressions on Olivia's face! From shock to happiness and fear then that one beat before despite her better judgment she falls into her altmom's hug.

Then immediately after the hug, when altmom calls her 'sweetheart' Olivia recoils and jumps back, almost afraid because she knows that more than ever she has to hold on to her identity but it's difficult in the face of someone she loves/loved so dearly.

altDunham!Mom: "If you've never been here before how do you know to come here?!"

Olivia's long pause and the confusion on her face as she struggles to find an answer that makes sense to her. Except the answer she comes to isn't hers.

"I think at that point Olivia kinda of went, well, I'm just going to try the path of least resistance. Because I don't want to not have this now. If everyone is telling me this is so. Y'know what? This is actually an easy place for me to-to live in."

This. It was this brief moment, the close-up to Olivia's face and her eyes, like she... not exactly came to a decision but sort of, as Anna said, when Olivia went with the path of least resistance because this was her mother holding her. After all these years and, I think, some part of Olivia realizes that this is what Walter must have felt like years ago except in Walter's case it led to losing his mind. For Olivia, a possible lose of identity.

I think I better stop looking at the ratings now. It reminds me far too much of Life season 2 ratings and I can't bare that, especially with what happened to the show. I am not made of stern stuff when it comes to that!
