Its not secret I didn't like the ending of How I Met Your Mother, and then after months of still feeling bitter and bad about it, they finally release the Official alternate ending of HIMYM, and we get now why the networks came down hard on the fan endings.

But, seriously, seriously if this was one of the alternate endings, why did Carter & Bays think the other one was better than this?

This is my ending from now on, and does a LONG way in salvaging the series for me.

They came down hard on the fan edits because the fan edits were better and they were scrambling to last minute make up for their epic mistake.

And yes, I believe that's also the reason, I just can't believe how epically they made a mistake with that, how they thought the other ending was better than this!

Given a choice between this and the original, this was the better ending and it tied the show together thematically.

I don't think they had an alternate ending prepared. I think when they saw all the outrage and fan edits they realized they needed to make one of their own.

Of course, there's still the question of what was going through their heads in thinking the original ending was a decent ending. How I Met Your [tragically dead] Mother [and you were bored by this and said I should shack up with your divorced Aunt Robin] is a terrible concept for a show.
