“Due to the nature of Buffy and Tara's friendship in season 6, would Buffy still have fell away from the Scoobies in S7 if Spike hadn’t been there and gravitated toward Tara? Or would she and the Scoobies still be close?"
for seekingoutfriday
I’ve been thinking about the last season of Buffy a lot, and especially how much I love Buffy and Tara’s dynamic so this is very timely!
Honestly, I think even without Spike, Buffy would have been distant from the Scoobies, even in canon she wasn’t allowed to be angry at her friends from pulling her from heaven and that alway bugged me. So I don’t see how that would change, I think it would make Buffy’s friendship with Tara more essential because she isn’t her friends, she isn’t family but I don’t think it would happen that quickly either because I think for Buffy, Tara is Willow’s, not in a possessive way, but that Tara is Willow’s Person.
I can imagine that once everything comes to a head between Tara and Willow happens, and the break-up happens, I think Buffy’s barely repressed resentment of Willow will start bubbling into the surface because she won’t be distracted by the Spike of It All.
I’d even wager there will be a slight sliding scale of relationships that Tara will become more of Buffy’s best friend, and Person. But I think Tara would be more of a healing friendship for Buffy (and it’s not just because I ship them— okay, it’s a little bit because I ship them).
I think it would be a long and quiet climb before her friendship with Willow will be repaired. Xander, would be… easier I think because I don’t think Buffy and Xander reached a real level of closeness because of Xander’s crush on Buffy, and she was careful not to lead Xander on.
I think Tara could help Buffy and Dawn reconcile and Buffy and Giles’s relationship would be something that will take its time to repair, but this is a strong relationship and after a good talk between them, I think their relationship will weather the storm.
I would be lying if I say that by the end of this run, I’m not imagining Buffy and Tara end up in a relationship after a long slow burn of will they/won’t they. And Tara ends up as Buffy’s most healthy relationship just because of how gentle Tara is, and how Tara would also blossom more with Buffy’s initial friendship, and because I don’t think Tara is the type to really let her anger fester I could see Tara try to mend her relationship with Willow. Except that, after everything, she can’t really bring herself to trust Willow.
They’d fall back into old habits but there would be a wake-up call from Tara’s side where she realizes that Willow was still Willow. And in between the moments where Buffy’s cheering Tara on, she’d feel a burn of something she can’t quite place and kind of let go.
Buffy’s moment of realization would be kind of like Luke Danes of Gilmore Girls moment of realization with his self help tapes.
Yes, I just equated my Buffy/Tara feels with Luke/Lorelai… shhhh…
Like, do I imagine Buffy freaking out and baking a lot of cookies for everyone? And the diligently scrubbing clean every place she goes to, and then quietly doing a lot of nice things for Tara without saying so?
I do.
They’re my low-key OTP, okay? Sue me.
