For me, personally the way I finally could understand Twelve was to watch Time of the Doctor back to back with Deep Breath and after that my whole understanding of Twelve and his arc shifted. I fell in love with Twelve all because I added in the context of Eleven's headspace in the final moments before he became Twelve.
And I thought the same thing could apply and it did! Also, Chibnall is a character guy, even when he says its for newbies. Clearly, this emotional journey pays off for long time fans becaue man, everything Thirteen does now feels like a continuation, a throughline from Twelve to Thirteen.
I also realized a couple of days ago, that because of Timey Wimey stuff-- for the audience it's been a year, but for the Doctor? That's only been a few days!
