And, oh, this is how it's done.
Oh, and I've been noticing a trend in Who fandom these days... the way they beat on Rose-- Rose is not perfect character but I don't think it warrants the hate she's been getting, it's also bad form to cut on her just to raise another character. Whatever fandom there is I don't think it's good for fans to bring down a character so they can raise up another character. It's just bad form.
I love Vala so much I can't even stand it, I really do wish the writers were up to the task with her story she deserves it so much. She was a thief, a conwoman and a Host and unwilling mother to the Orisci but despite of the writing CB more than delivers. I believe there are layers under her, there is that brittleness in the hurt when she thought she was betrayed, I feel it when she feels it.
She isn't Aeryn, she's Vala and despite the outward happy-go-lucky apperance she is practical and pragmatic it shows in her electric conversation with Daniel in the episode with the... where he was an ori person? And shows here with Adria. She's conflicted, yes, and she feels something for Adria but when it came time to kill her Vala was willing to take up the gun and shoot Adria.
I love the scene where Cameron and Daniel were unknowingly facing-off with their spy and Vala just casually shoots him in the back.
One thing I wished they did was to have Vala react more to the fact that Adria has a snake in her belly *and* they're letting a Tok'ra (sp?) operate on Adria. There's so many layers there that needed pulling I do like though, that the Tok'ra guy kept giving her this suspicious looks, I just wish Vala shot him the same suspicious 'I don't like you' glance too.
I know I should talk about Cameron and his reactions (which were perfect) but this was a Vala episode, I wish they had this instead of the Family Ties things which I really thought was pointless. Vala should have her own show, seriously, she deserves it. She's a great character and she could go dark.
At the end though, it was telling while the whole team were speculating about Adria's ascencion Vala was silent, she's pulled in herself it was only the last bit where she was saying it was a win that she started talking and it seemed more like Vala was trying to convince herself more than she was trying to assure the team.
On another note, I think MB is so much better as Ba'al! She never quite fit as Adria but as Ba'al? Whoa!

So, here's the thing, why is it I like the SG-1 team so much even if they do cause their own trouble than Torchwood that does the same?
I suppose it has to do with that it's because the SG team are more likeable, even when Daniel is playing smug the other characters pull me back in because they are earnest and, despite everything, they are *competent* with their job! Torchwood on the other hand, I don't like most of the characters (especially Owen) and for a special ops team they cause so much trouble and they're so... incompetent. Then, they're trying to play the card that the job destroys your family and eventually your soul, that it has costs but X-files has done it better and they stretched it for a few seasons that by the time season 4? 5? hit it's become Mulder and Scully against the world. Plus, they are competent in their job.
Torchwood on the other hand, only have a few episodes in and they're already beating us over the head about how haaaard the job is and how soul suckiiiing and whatever. And God, they're smug, if they think Ten and Rose were smug and obnoxious this team is worse! The power walks and the way they talk about UNIT is annoying. It would work so much better if they earned it but they don't.
We cheered the Angel team on because they were underdogs and even if they did a lot of stupid things we know that they try. They keep on fighting and keep falling but at least they try to do good work and sometimes they are good at it. I'm sorry if it seems I'm beating on Torchwood but frankly they need to step up.
I'm good at handwaving plot as long as the story's engaging and has emotional resonance but dammit, it's not. Frankly, no matter how much they try to woobify Owen all I want to do is throw him down a volcano. Ianto could have been great but then the Cyberwoman just threw it all away. I can understand people going emotional doing crazy things because of that but dammit, they should make us care first. Lisa came out of nowhere (and God, what is with that outfit???) then the whole Ianto vows vengeance against Jack what happened to that? Next few episodes he's playing stopwatch games with Jack? WHAT?
So, I suppose category for me liking a show is: competence, likeable (they might not even start that way but show me something to care about), emotional resonance, an engaging story and some humor.
As pretty as Jack is (and really, out of all the team, he's not even as monsterous as they keep accusing him to be as the writer in Strange Horizons pointed out, its the team themselves who are and not Jack) I think I'll be dropping the show next season until I hear they've gotten better. I'll just catch up on him in Doctor Who S3.
