I've been reading some reactions to Torchwood the recent miniseries seemed to divide fandom. But I'm still in the same place regarding it. I mean, it did good for Torchwood but it suffered from RTD's finale syndrome a lot.

Some fans defending the miniseries go on to say that those who disliked the miniseries only does so because of Ianto's death and then goes on to remind the disgruntled fans that TW has always been a darker show. The Angel to Doctor Who's Buffy.

But that doesn't work for me because while I did like Ianto and enjoyed the Jack/Ianto I was still perplexed by how Jack and Ianto got together. But I did think Ianto dying was too much too soon after Tosh and Owen's death and also because at the end of it I thought Ianto dying was unnecessary. I think Jack would still go through using his grandson even with Ianto there and Jack's goodbye scene would work better if the person answering Jack's question to: 'Why should I stay here?' was Ianto.

And it wasn't the darkness that was throwing me off (although, I do have a problem with too much unrelenting dark, see my non-fannishness towards BSG) instead it was and always has been teh stupid.

There were so many better ways they could have handled the alien thing and to be honest part of my reaction is because I know this Earth has been subjected to worse and handled the situation better than the one we saw. Also, UNIT has technology to fight aliens, I don't understand why they're folding so easily when there was no sign of a ship hovering over Earth!

Earth's been through numerous alien invasions already and each time humans fought back hard. I also keep coming back to the thought that if Harriet Jones were still Prime Minister none of this would have been handled so badly and the woman replacing the PM was worse since she was the one who suggested 'culling' the have nots!

Although, I think the real villain in all of this was the Prime Minister and the cabinet. How the mundanity of beauracracy can justify anything. That was chilling.

I also liked the first contact with the 456, I liked Frobisher's handling it. And man, RTD had a winner in Peter Capaldi. In lesser hands Frobisher wouldn't have worked.

With that said Fandom's attitudes towards Gwen is turning me off. A lot. She was fantastic and awesome through it all. In fact all the women were. I hate that they're wishing Gwen harm for surviving just because their poor Ianto cakes died. Ugh. I like Ianto but c'mon.

Then there's the fans who're sending out death threats to James Moran (the other writer of the miniseries). Stop it, fandom!

I have serious issues against the series but c'mon that's going a bridge too far!

I dunno. In a more fantastic 'verse, absolutely - but this Torchwood wasn't so happy-go-lucky, very much not Dr. Who (a show I like, mind you) where everything turns out perfectly by chance and the stupidity of the aliens themselves. If conquerors with deadly viruses came, though, and didn't even come close, I'm honestly not sure what Earth would be supposed to do.
