I promised this a long time ago and it's been sitting on my hard drive for a while, not a complete list. I've realized I have a sucky tagging system so now most of my fic recs are, uh, misplaced. But here, have some I've managed to scrounge together.

This is a work-in-progress.

Five Times Charlie Crews Didn't Tan (and One Time He Got Burned by: [livejournal.com profile] denynothing1
Spoilers: General Season 1 spoilers
Characters: Charlie Crews, Jennifer Conover, Bobby Stark, Ted Earley, Constance Griffiths, Dani Reese
Summary: Snapshots by natural light, 1993 to 2007

Don't worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.
~~ Baz Luhrman, "Everybody's Free (to wear sunscreen)"

Six stories about Charlie and the people around Charlie from the start of the conspiracy to the end of season 1. There's really not enough praise I can give to this story. It's just. It has the tone down. It has LA in all its quirky, crazy 90s glory right.

It has the FBI Policeman's Ball. Or as [livejournal.com profile] denynothing1 explained it:

FBI Ball fic is an old, old XF ficfandom tradition of writing a story where Mulder and Scully dress up in formal wear and go out and do non-FBI-type things. Of course, the FBI doesn't actually hold a Ball, but whoever the originator of this idea was, she was determined to get M&S in formal wear and so she did, dammit. As is typical with fic, the idea caught on to the point where you can find all sorts of XF stories using this conceit -- Lord King Bad Fic, just plain Badfic, and some clever, clever commentary-type fic.

It's everything wrapped in one story and to this day, this is one of my few go to Life stories.

The Searchers by: Vehemently
Spoilers: General Season 1 spoilers
Characters: Charlie Crews. Dani Reese. Kyle Hollis.
Summary: A late-night interview. A confession. A turning point.

Tagline: "What kind of people would revere somebody like you?

Another pitch perfect Life fic. Set immediately after season 1 finale even though I liked how Charlie found Rachel, I still wish it was Reese who'd find Rachel.

This story tho. I'm going to quote my own reaction to this fix a few years back:

I love this story a lot because it captures everythring: the rhythm and language of Reese and Crews investigative partnership, the fierce loyalty, the quests and Kyle, the center of the storm. Calm then fearful and... and so many things.

Kyle Hollis is sitting at the table with his hands flat on its surface. Of course; he is handcuffed; there aren't many places to put your hands. His enormous forehead is pointed downwards, casting his face into shadow. He doesn't look up when Charlie opens the door.

"We're on a break," says the public defender, shifting his feet to stand. His hand comes up, Stop, and shows his wedding ring glinting in the cold light.

Charlie says, "I know," and behind him Dani walks in. Charlie is not allowed in here without Dani, and even so Lieutenant Davis doesn't like it. Not that she likes anything. Charlie takes a chair and Dani takes a chair and they settle and then silence smothers the room again. The public defender clasps his hands in front of his stomach, like a city councilor at a ceremony.

The irritation of Dani Reese is palpable in the air; Charlie starts in sooner than he expected to:

"Kyle Hollis." Kyle does not move. His eyes are open but the lashes don't budge. "Kyle. Kyle Kyle Kyle."

Dani leans in. "Orson Parker. Mr. Parker.
Reverend Parker." She is drawing out the Rs in that name with punitive pleasure. Charlie does not look over his shoulder, because he can already see in his mind the half-smile of antagonism on Dani's face.

Kyle raises his head. He isn't looking at Dani. His gaze is intense, unavoidable. His face is very strange, blunt and framed with the swooping gray at his temples, like the head of a hammer. Charlie has remarked to himself how strange those features are all day, as they have contorted into different expressions one after another. Of all the people on the planet, Charlie ranks himself in the top five of knowing the strangeness of Kyle Hollis's face, just on the basis of today.

Dani says, "You've been living in Indio five years, is that right, Reverend?"

The public defender grunts a little. Other people have already covered this material. Charlie doesn't disabuse them of the notion that this is still an interrogation.

"Yes," says Kyle. He is calm, patient. The furor of his preaching is absent, and so is the malevolence. His eye-color is like shallow water on a sunny day, translucent, meaningless.

"Reverend," Dani continues. "What kind of Reverend would that be? What kind of people would revere somebody like you?"

Stakeout by: [livejournal.com profile] imsanehonest
Spoilers: Episode 1x04
Summary: There were certainly worse things Dani could be doing with her Saturday than being on a twenty-four hour stakeout with her partner at a suspected drug den, even if she couldn’t think of any the moment. Crews spitting out zen haikus had a tendency to do that to a person.

“Become a part of the universe in its place, one with the world instead of being defined by it.” More of his spittle made the horrific flight from between his nonsense spewing lips to the clean glass of her window.

“It’s all about the transcendence, Reese.”

She felt her eye twitch. “Crews,” she ground out.

“Yes, Reese?” he asked in an irritatingly pleasant manner, so eager that some of the apple spittle made its way to her cheek.

“Don’t think I won’t hurt you.”

Crews looked at her motionlessly for a moment, obviously trying to figure out how serious she was about the, very thinly, veiled threat.

Eyes quickly roamed from her steely glare to her fingers clenched aggressively around the steering wheel, and he promptly brought the apple away from his lips and tossed it out the window.

Dani gave him a small, smug and self-satisfied, smile before turning her gaze back to the den.

Crews followed suit.

A few, blissful, moments of silenced passed before Crews shifted stiffly in his seat.

“You wouldn’t have said that if you had transcended.”

She shot him another glare.

He shrugged innocently. “I’m just saying.”

Bill and I Are on a Break by: [livejournal.com profile] squeelated
Spoilers: Up to 1x06
Summary: Dani thinks he knows.

She thinks he knows.

No, Dani edits herself, in a way she never did before she met him and learned just how differently two people could perceive the same sentence, I feel like he knows.

Inside Ourselves, A Hidden Sun by: [livejournal.com profile] squeelated
Spoilers: Season 1
Summary: It’s getting too hot for Dani.

He stood up and offered her his hand. "Come on."

"What?" she asked suspiciously.

"Just come on," he insisted. "It won't hurt."

Hesitantly, Dani let him drag her up off the bench and out onto the grass. "Kick off your shoes."

"Nuh-uh." Dani shook her head and made a break for it, but he caught her by the elbow and held her there. “This is L.A. – have you thought about what might be in that grass?” He didn't say a word, but Dani knew from experience that the fastest way to get on with their lives would be for her to relent and try out whatever little Zen exercise he had in mind. "Fine!" She huffed and kicked off her shoes in the grass.

"Socks too," he said, letting go of her long enough to do the same.

Dani sighed, but did as he said. "What now?" she asked in resignation.

He grabbed her by the elbow again and steered her to a spot of his liking, half in and half out of the shade of a large oak. He stood close behind her and guided her into a pose - tapping the bare skin at her ankles with his toes to get her to widen her stance and taking her wrists in his hands to spread her arms wide. "Now," he said softly, "close your eyes and tell me, what do you feel?"

"I feel like an idiot," she grumbled, looking around to see who might be watching - the nannies taking toddlers to the playground, the joggers, the beat cop on foot patrol.

Into the Past by: [livejournal.com profile] squeelated
Spoilers: Season 1
Summary: What was it like for you in prison?

"What was it like for you in prison?" Reese doesn't look at him when she asks the question. She stares straight ahead, watching the door to the house they are staking out.

Charlie has thought about it before, and come to the conclusion that there is no answer to that question. There is no answer because there are too many answers.

Pop, Chew, Swallow by: [livejournal.com profile] zerodetorres
Spoilers: Episode 1x06, Powerless
Summary: The simplest things in life could be found in a cup of grapes.

She sighed. "Why are you following me?"

"Am I? Or perhaps we have the same destination." He raised his eyebrows in emphasis.

"My destination is my car," she replied pointedly, annoyed.

"But in life," he commented calmly, "our destinations are all the same." He smiled slightly, looked up and squinted at the sun.

A Submerged Flower by: [livejournal.com profile] mirageofmae
Spoilers: Season 1
Summary: Dani gets a little older every day.

She really doesn’t like him some days. Like the days when his calm spreads like a storm cloud over a mountain. It’ll brush against her skin and make her twitch. No matter what it looks like, she’s not calm inside. She’s angry and screaming and glaring at the world for being so damn bright. She buys bigger sunglasses while Charlie tips his head back and lets the sun burn more lines into his skin.

“You’re going to get cancer you keep doing that.” She lets the words snap out of her mouth like they’re those little sharp things ninjas throw. She idly wonders if she’s been leaving the TV on too late at night if those are the kind of thoughts her mind produces.

He doesn’t reply, just tugs on her jacket until she’s parallel with him. She tilts her head back like she’s following his line of sight.

The sun is warm. Charlie is calm next to her. She feels like a supernova sometimes and wonders if she can kick him without looking stupid.

Crews/Reese

Orange by: [livejournal.com profile] sloanesomething
Spoilers: Season 1
Summary: The shower was it, he admits to himself later, when he’s in a mood to admit things to himself.

Everybody has that one hour of the day that sucks. Matt the tech guy always crashes around 11pm, no matter what, and it takes two cups of coffee to get him going again.

Charlie fades at two or three in the morning; it was between rounds at the. At the. He just gets tired then.

Lt. Davis never gets tired. It's kind of amazing.

Reese fades at dawn, always twenty minutes where she’s falling asleep on her desk. At first he woke her up and plied her with coffee, but these past few months he’s taken to looking at her with her half-closed eyes, her face in her hands, the straggly hair, the soft expression that’s annoyed even in sleep.

When she wakes up, he throws her a platitude, or some information. Anything to get her thinking about something besides him watching her.

The Edge Of by: [livejournal.com profile] piecesofalice
Spoilers: Season 1
Summary:

“This didn’t happen.”

“Well, it did happen.”

“It didn’t, I mean that.”

“It’s impossible to say something didn’t happen, when it obviously did, considering that-"

“If you continue that sentence, I will throw you out, hide your clothes and call the SWAT team.”

I open my eyes and exist by: [livejournal.com profile] dreamingwriter
Spoilers: Season 2. AU as of Initiative 38.
Summary: Dani is taken.

None of the FBI agents will talk to her - which, ironically enough, is exactly what assures her that she's being kidnapped by agents, not smoking, bitter, pacing ransomers out for her partner’s money. Well, that and the badges embellished with FBI lettering, shining in the sun streaming through the windshield of the van. They wear suits and scan traffic for suspicious vehicles and double back more than once and it's oddly comforting in the face of government corruption.

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark, she thinks and stifles most of a bitter grin. She hated Hamlet in high school.

Post-One

Sometimes, the voices in my head seem to like me by: [livejournal.com profile] serrico
Spoilers: Post-One coda

They ride back into the city together, sitting silently while Bodner drives. The last Charlie sees of Reese is when Tidwell all but pulls her out of the car and shepherds her through the crowd of special agents and lawyers waiting anxiously on the steps of the station.

Charlie gives his statement to other special agents and lawyers, in a whole other part of the building. He's pretty sure they don't want to let him leave when he's done, but leave he does.

Seever falls into step with him in the hall on his way to the impound lot to pick up his car. "Captain Tidwell took Detective Reese to LA Mercy to be checked out," she says, without looking at him.

"Thanks," he replies, and at the next corner she veers off at a right angle to him and walks away, her head held high.

Destination Unknown by: [livejournal.com profile] romanticalgirl
Spoilers: Post-One

“You think too much, Crews.”

They’re the first words she says to him, and he shrugs. It’s true, but it’s all he ever had to do for twelve years. He realizes they’re alone now, everyone else off somewhere, being held accountable for what he knows is all his fault. He thinks maybe he understands Rayborn and Dani’s father and the rest now. Letting someone else take the fall is easier than it should be.

The moment your eyes open by: [livejournal.com profile] teenwitch77
Spoilers: Post-One

“So I guess we have things to talk about,” she started as she neared. She stopped before she got too close.

Crews nodded, looking out over the bustling car park and linking his arms over the rails.

“I guess we have things,” he agreed.

Anyone else would have hurried home as soon as they were released - probably accepting a week of leave on top of that - but not Reese. She wanted to fight. To prove that what happened had not affected her.

After their desperate bid for connection in the orange grove, a slight shyness had settled between them in the interim. Their gazes hovered and slipped like two children tentatively approaching one another in the playground.

Reese gradually sidled up to him, leaning over the rail at his side. The wind tussled her hair and the sun furrowed out exhausted circles under her eyes. She craned her neck to look down at the officers traipsing in and out of the lower building. Despite everything, she seemed more at peace than he had ever seen her.

“I don’t really know where to start, Crews.”

Equals One by: [livejournal.com profile] revelininsanity
Spoilers: Post-One coda.

It was like this, except that it wasn't and it was like this, Crews standing, head up to the sky, sun through sunglasses, light through darkness. Now there's nothing to filter the light, nothing to hide the burn, but he looks up any, up and up and up.

When You Plus Another Equals One by: [livejournal.com profile] monimala
Spoilers: Post-One
Summary: A post-ep for the season two finale, 2.21, "One." He barely blinks at all until he and Reese are safely across his threshold.

She comes home with him after they release her from Cedars-Sinai. She didn't even want to stay the 24 hours for observation, insisting that Roman barely even loosened a tooth and the twinges in her ribs are from having the wind knocked out of her. But he said "please." Just "please," and she looked at him for a long beat before reaching for the paper-thin hospital gown and pulling the curtain closed around her gurney for privacy.

The Hard Part by: Nox
Spoilers: Post-One
Summary: The hard part is everything that comes after.

Dani smiled through the windscreen of the car, soft like he'd never seen it and her eyes fixed on his. He grinned at her as he slid into the back seat behind her, she turned to watch him, cheek pressed against the head rest. She reached back her hand, a little blindly and he wrapped his fingers around it, skin warm and grip tight. She didn't let go.
