The last few episodes, except for the Grumpy-centric one finally got me interested in the show again. I was still watching but 'til the Kathryn-centric episode OUAT was relegated to background watching for me.
Also, I think 'What Happened to Frederick' confirms that David's wishy-washy attitude is brought on by the spell. The contrast between James | Charming and David is really stark. Charming believes in true love but also has the strength of his convictions and before David had his 'memories' back so did he then everything turned upside down and suddenly David can't make a decision.
'Red Handed' was also another fantastic episode and I love that we finally get to see Ruby | Red's story. And OMG. TOTALLY CALLED IT. Ruby is the wolf! The Big Bad Wolf! I love wolves! I love Snow building friendships and this was clearly right after the Lone Tear Huntsman set Snow free since she's still in her princess garb and not as good with the creeping and stealing. But oh, poor Red. I can't believe they actually went there and had Red eat poor Peter. :( I feel like she and Oz should talk.
Now comes my favorite among favorites. I have been waiting for some hints of canny!Snow to make an appearance in Mary Margaret and boy did she make an appearance or what? Also, I get my badass!dark!Snow too!
I've been wondering when Snow would do something about Regina... I guess her guilt about whatever she did to Regina out weighed her need to take back her throne. Maybe it seems like her people and kingdom are still thriving or possibly being hunted down made Snow too tired and hopeless to see any way out but to leave the realm. I also loved that it was James | Charming who's very adamant about true love. He's the one pushing about feelings and looking so love lorn while Snow continues to snark at him.
I didn't love Grumpy trying to stop her from killing Regina because she needs to remain good and pure. Also, out of everyone, Snow has legitimate reasons to be angry at Regina! I don't know if Snow knew or suspected Regina killed her father though so maybe that's one of the reasons why Snow didn't go after Regina?
I had less issues with Charming because he's a hopeless romantic and believes the good in everyone and also, he heard it from Rumplestiltskin himself... that Snow killing Regina will set her in the very path Regina set herself in.
This goes back full circle to Storybrooke where an incarcerated Mary Margaret is slowly losing hope and faith. Also, I think being alone with her thoughts is not doing Mary Margaret any favors. David coming to her and asking her in a really round about way if she killed Kathryn was like being stabbed (another difference between Charming and David, I think, is that Charming would just come out and ask) and Emma might say she would find something... well, like Snow said. Everything is all words to her until she can see results Mary Margaret is going to start keeping her own counsel.

That look there? Taken by itself looks chilling.

Emma gently tells Mary about confirming the heart did belong to Kathryn (which in this show doesn't mean she's dead!) and Mary doesn't react to it. I think she's been expecting this for sometime now. Instead she's soaking this information in, seeing her options shrink to almost nothing.
Emma looks at Mary and she's desperate to give Mary some sort of hope, because I think the news might break her. It does but not in the way she thinks it might. She tells Mary her suspicions about Regina and Mary is invigorated that might be her way out but Emma tells her, rightly that she can't just go to Regina without some hard evidence.
Then we see it...

It's an expression we've seen in Snow but never on Mary Margaret.
Mary questions Regina's motives. Why would Regina frame her? What in the world did she ever do to Regina that she's doing everything in her power to frame her for murder. She's off somewhere in her head and you can see the wheels turn and her expression grows more distant and hard.
She has barely any support and the people of the town has already condemned her and the ruler of Storybrooke is responsible for framing her. Her back is to the wall.
Mary doesn't know it but she's been in this situation before and there's something in Mary that responds to that.
I think this, more than anything, is Regina's biggest misstep. She's roused a dragon and it might take time but she woke up the part in Mary that's long been asleep and this is going to be part of her downfall.

Mary's so deep in her mind it isn't until Emma touches her hand that she's brought back to the present but even then it takes a while before she comes back to herself. She's so startled to feel someone touch her that she just whips her head to Emma.

The distant, hard expression takes a while to disappear. I think the forests have made an imprint on Snow and it goes deeper than the curse can hold. Snow is a survivor, who survived by skill and cunning and living off the land. We don't know how long Snow was with Red and how long she's been alone but maybe her time alone has made her solitary.
James | Charming and now Emma pull her back.

But it's not enough because as I've noted Snow values action above words and it's something that's ingrained in Mary as well.
She trusts Emma. She doesn't trust Regina. She doesn't trust that somehow Regina will win using even more underhanded methods... the thing is Mary doesn't know that Emma is willing to risk the same.
But it goes full circle now. Snow White was once a fugitive and now Mary has become one too on her own volition and maybe taking matters in her own hands investigating why Regina is making her life so miserable.
I wonder if Regina is going to start slipping up about keeping appearances between the divide of Storybrooke and the Fairy Tale land? Emma and Regina's antagonistic relationship is fun to watch but I'm so much more interested in Regina and Snow's because Emma v Regina is a variation of Regina's antagonistic relationship to Snow.
And everything, everything about this spell was born of her hatred for Snow.
Can't wait to see the next episode!

Date: 2012-03-25 12:45 pm (UTC)The rumplestiltskin/belle thing I just... I don't even know. On some id level I get it on the other I'm just. But. He had her in the dungeons! What about wanting adventures and dazzling swordfights! Where was that love for adventure? I know she said it but I really didn't see it and how they 'fell in love' I'm just.
I loved the animated movie because well love for LIBRARIES and Belle longing for a wider world (and in my head canon Beast left the castle and went out for adventures, occasionally forgetting he no longer has Beast strength then Belle rescues Beast a LOT) and Belle actually standing up for herself. And, okay, there's still stockholm there but animated Belle seemed so much more alive.
I love Kathryn a lot I hope, hope, hope that's a magical clone heart than her real heart!
