I finally knuckled down to watch Legend of Korra, I think, I might watch this series in bulk, maybe I'll a 2 episode buffer would do? I wonder if I can stick with it!

I knew LoK would be a lot more serious than season 1 of AtLA but I didn't expect it to be as dark as it was. I also didn't expect how much the past affected the world they're living in. I mean... even in anime I've never seen that kind of worldbuilding.

The chi blockers clearly learned everything they knew from Ty Lee, the spirit bending also seemed to open the door for Amon and... boy, wherever Azula is she must be spinning at regular people being able to Lightning Bend!

Also, the scenery porn was amazing. If there's one thing I love it's 1920s-1930s era clothes and scenery and then they added the Shanghai inspiration mix to it! Even the music!

I also got the sense that Toph and Aang had a falling out which accounts for Lin's reaction to Korra and that breaks my heart. I hope I'm wrong here! It would break my heart if the family broke apart because of the last and final conflict they had before Aang's passing.

As for Mako and Bolin, I was thisclose to not liking Mako just because I have a kneejerk reaction about characters like Mako but then someone pointed out, I think it was meganbmoore, Mako and Bolin was like a genderswapped Mai and Ty Lee and that helped!

Plus, someone mentioned that the Aang and Zuko statues in the Republic City must be Aang and Zuko trolling each other. I accept this headcanon.

So, my initial reaction to LoK is that this world is darker than the one Aang left it. So many shades of gray and so many things for Korra to untangle because force isn't something that's going to work here because the Equalists are right in some aspect. I can't wait for more!

I agree that the show is darker, but I don't think the world is darker. We just are seeing it through a more mature protagonist/set of characters who are more able to see and process the darkness. Aang was mature for his age and was incredibly wise, but a lot of the darkness seemed to roll off him, especially early on. Where Aang was effectively, what, 11? Korra is 17, IIRC, and I think a lot of the added darkness come from that, and the increased immediacy of the darkness (Aang and Co. were traveling, and places look very different if you're passing through them, rather than living in them.)

I also am really looking forward to seeing where this takes us!
