There was a lot to take in this episode, a lot happened, and god this show is just so good!

There were forty-three iterations of the Machine and only one didn't try to kill Harold. And of all that forty three iterations tried to kill each other (Sarah Connor would raze Harold's lab to the ground if she existed in this 'verse, that room is Sarah's worst nightmare come to life).

I'm with Harold, I'm terrified of the Machine's capabilities now but I'm even more terrified of Samaritan, I don't think Arthur Claypool ever had the foresight to make Samaritan care, or test out what would happen if Samaritan was ever in sight of other AIs.

It frightens me that an AIs response to another AI (in POI at least) is to kill the other one, and the next, is to be let free into the internet.

(It's a level of trust for Harold that he built a failsafe to free the Machine itself.)

Samaritan has fifty-eight top officials in power, and I don't think its just limited to the USA. I'm pretty sure its now global, and now the mandate of Samaritan is to find The Machine!

Another terrifying thing to consider? According to Samaritan's interface Martine is Asset No. 29.

And all of them have capabilities to go god mode.

Root

Oh, Root. You're headed for a fall aren't you? All this trust in the Machine, I think Harold has the right idea not to trust the Machine so completely, because in the end it should have an objective.

But man that moment of Harold asking Root's help in the computers and casually breaking into Google and Yahoo???

That was Root's dream come true, even Harold seemed thrilled this was actually the moment they both were waiting for since they laid eyes on each other's code.

I really love Harold called Root on it, and that he noticed Root might feel lonely. He's accepted the Machine has a special place in Root's life, but he's also terrified for her. They've come such a long way.

And he called her friend.

In the POI-verse 'Friend' holds a really high status. It means everything.

Harold

After how many years of not directly conversing with the Machine, Harold finally starts addressing it.

The earlier versions of the Machine were malevolent, especially in how it learned to lie and kill Harold.

But you can also see the risk taker in Harold, and the engineer in him. Nathan told him maybe its not wise to create a powerful AI like the Machine but the look on Harold's face, as if he relished the challenge.

For Harold to want to try to connect with Root because he sensed that Root was lost (he was after all, the only one Root spent considerable time with).

And the way Harold gaslighted Simon, it didn't sit right with him but in order to save his life, they had to. Things Harold would have refused to do before and must now do in order to survive and win the war... we are headed for a dark time.

Shaw

Shaw didn't get much to do but what she did do, she did well. Sticking to her objective, buying Simon time by stealing his phone in a brush pass worthy of Parker of Leverage.

And even if they haven't spent much time together, Shaw noticed something was up with Root.

Also, I liked that Shaw overruled Harold's orders to John, because the Mission took priority.

John

I'm glad to see cowboy!worst!cop John is still there but now he's going to therapy, which honestly I think he needs. He needs to curb that hero complex because its going to get him and everyone killed.

And I love they continue to address John's grief regarding Carter (I kind of also want more from Fusco too, but I think he's made his peace, John hasn't let it go).

And John finally called Shaw 'Sameen'!!!

Root and Shaw

You know what I like about this show? The way it takes things in an unexpected route, we were all expecting Shaw to rescue Root, and maybe in another episodes where the stakes are so much higher Shaw will but I like that the things that happen between them are kind of subtle.

Root gravitates towards Shaw immediately (with little or no space between them) and even if Root hasn't been around Shaw for a while, Shaw notices that something is up with Root. Shaw prefers Root's perky psycho self than the quiet, pensive Root.

Root went so far as told Harold if the worst happened he should tell Shaw how she felt about her. It was a thing that happened.

And that Harold knew (of course he did, anyone with eyes knew, and of course Shaw knows! but I digress...) and told Root as much. Then when Harold reminded Shaw that the war must be won 'at any cost'.

Shaw knows this, and Harold of course knows Shaw knows this, and was in fact worried about Root himself but I think he also needed to tell Shaw about it too (also maybe to test out the waters about how Shaw regards Root too, maybe?)

But the way Shaw just stops dead is more telling than any words said. And I'm so happy its a thing that happened. It's a development and a long stride in it.

So many relationships in this episodes took a stride forward IMO!
