I've watched the first episode of Torchwood, skipped everything and flew straight to episode 8 because I had to know if it *does* get better.

Fortunately, it was and it was a shame they killed Suzie again.

Ep. 1 Everything Changes

Normally, I'm the first one to handwave any plot holes and be more forgiving to characters who aren't thinking logically but watching this episode I can't help turning my brain off. It was distracting! I was trying really hard to concentrate on the story but the stupid things kept distracting me!

First of all, the complete *lax* in security almost had me in fits, the way the team brought those things home. I'd Torchwood to have more failsafes. Van Statten in Doctor Who had better security.

And it really did start slow. It wasn't as engaging as the premier of Doctor Who, that really got me in the first go.

Is it me or did the rain look fake?

But yes, Captain Jack remains of the pretty. The moment when Torchwood arrived? Yeah.

Gwen - I like Gwen, she's different from Rose. Curious and I think much more... mature in her way in comparison where Rose started from. She knows the costs. I just hope she won't do anything bad against Rhys because I *like* Rhys.

Ianto - I like Ianto. Quiet, competent -- I think the only competent member of the team although from what I'm hearing regarding your Cyberized girlfriend you'll cease being competent... But I'll keep an open mind.

Toshiko - Have no opinion yet since I haven't seen the ep centered on her but I hope she gets better other than techie girl. She's kinda like a low-key Kaylee in her way.

Owen - Primarily, my thoughts were, 'Die you smirking bastard'. I hear he evens out. I watched the 8th episode he wasn't so smirking then but I have
to watch his progression.

Suzie - Of the lot, other than Ianto, she had more potential. The way she fixated on the ressurection glove was intense and she did seem to like her job. I would have liked to see how she was before Gwen arrived, before the glove. Now I keep thinking how it would have been if it was Ianto Suzie connected with. Imagine that two scarily competent and brilliant members. Ooh.

Jack - Jack, Jack, Jaaaaack. Bad Wolf!Rose really fixed you, huh? If she didn't want you to die, you're never gonna die. I miss Bad Wolf!Rose. I love that your clothing attire reflects you RAF days and your tastes in gun reminiscent of the guns you might have used in the '40s but what happened to your high tech gun, Jack? And Jack, what the hell are you doing on roof? Did ya think you were Batman? Or Angel?

I had this funny scene going in my head when I saw that, Jack's brooding over his city when someone tosses something on his back and he turns and its Rose looking at him with a bemused expression and saying, "And what do you think your doing playing all maudlin like?"

Episode 8 - They Keep Killing Suzie

I like this one, I like the implication that the police are getting frustrated with Torchwood's cavalier ways (and for a special ops, sooper sekrit team they sure are awful visible) but I also like that the captain (who was Jabe!) seemed open to a relationship with Torchwood.

But, oh, this episode was lovely complex and competent. I love how Gwen slowly worked up into this... fixation? no, this drive way into getting the truth and how her dislike for Suzie informed all her decisions and bringing Suzie to life.

And, Suzie, wow. She's clever and so interestingly *cold* when she killed her father. Her father.

Suzie's an interesting contrast to Jack, who insists that immortality isn't what its cut out to be and Suzie, who never wants to die. Its interesting how in this show, they say that there is no life after death that there's nothing there. Its not at all the thing I wanted to hear, its a thing I've thought of and it kept creeping me up everytime that thought pops in.

The arc they're hinting is also interesting and creepy.

Jack's willingness to kill Suzie should have surprised and upset me but it didn't. It was strange. I thought I'd come off it with an interesting read of Jack as ruthless but there was nothing for me.

I loved this episode and I wish they would bring back Suzie, I choose to read the ominous, 'gloves' comes in pairs thing as Suzie coming back to make more trouble for Torchwood. And how cool was Ianto? Competent again.

Frankly, I really think if Ianto and Suzie ran Torchwood nothing would come in their way.

Heh. I love how the police captain (Jabe!) had a bit of fun at Torchwood's expense.

Watching Torchwood and Ultraviolet concurrently is I think a bad idea since mostly Torchwood comes in looking bad -- at least in terms on how they conduct their affairs. Ultraviolet makes use of other branches to identify itself, Torchwood uses *Torchwood* to identify itself which always makes me headdesk.

I don't know if they're the most secret agency in like, all of Britain, why the bleeding hell are they announcing it all over the frelling place? Shouldn't they be more discreet?

Thinking about Torchwood inevitably leads me to think about Rose, it strikes me that its a wee bit unfair that Rose is untouched by what happened in The Parting of the Ways when, of everyone other than the Doctor, she should be most affected. I think there should have been more consequences for Rose being the Bad Wolf and I was disappointed that they dropped the storyline. It was infinitely interesting to me a werewolf was able to detect the wolf in Rose in Tooth & Claw. I also love that Rose was both horrified and fascinated when the werewolf devoured the man before her.

Also, I don't think its a coincidence that the name of the bay was Bad Wolf. I feel that the vortex isn't done with Rose, that its still there somewhere lurking in her mind.

I would really like to write a story of Rose's Torchwood adventures parallel to Jack's stories, only well, more competent. From what we've seen with Rose I don't think she'd be to happy with the retcon drug but also that the parallel Earth's Torchwood might run a little differnet. This Torchwood have been fighting cybermen for and defeated them successfully and they clearly use the technologies and create their own. Also, I think, Torchwood would run differently in her universe especially because Rose would be the first one to question Torchwood's methods, she'd push for change, be more involved in helping.

I like the idea that parallel Torchwood goes on to fight alien threats but without the Doctor's expertise, Torchwood sort of flounders and Rose stands-up to fill the void, using everything she's learned from the Doctor, incorporating his seat of the plans diplomacy and her own competent investigative skills. Plus, she can go and wield an axe again!

Then, somehow, subtly at first Rose doesn't notice but the words 'Bad Wolf' keep appearing, keep being referred to and when Rose finally notices she'd freeze, hairs standing on end at what it could possibly mean for her. Somehow a new threat will present itself, hinting that they could obliterate mankind and that its being drawn by something -- may or may not be the dormant vortex in Rose's mind. But somewhere along the line it will force Rose's dormant Bad Wolf powers to emerge and slowly she will be her own enemy until she finds a way to control it.

Of course, Mickey is part of her team and when there's a crisis and the new guy, whom I call Jones --and way before Torchwood aired-- mistake Mickey or Jake as the leader of the team but Mickey only smirks and then Rose walks in and starts asking the situation and Mickey inclines his head to Rose, who's sniffing the air --a Doctor method-- and comments how the air smells weird, and tells Jones: 'She's the boss.'

Rose is still friendly and compassionate, a bit aloof but when there's danger her eyes sparkles and Mickey would shake his head and fondly call Rose a 'nutter'.

So many stories about Rose and none we can ever see play out again. *sigh*

This by the way, is part of the Rose Tyler ficathon I've yet to turn-in/finish! *wince* Not to mention the Alias one. I really shouldn't have joined knowing my schedule. Lesson learned I suppose.
