Now, this, I know will make sane people shun me, I've recently read [personal profile] svilleficrecsOld Things Made New (Something Extra Remix) and I was suddenly struck with a plot bunny that spawned other plot bunnies and they won't stop hopping on my head!

The story is an AU post-POTW, a what if the TARDIS intervened again and instead of the Doctor dying, it changes Rose and turns her into a Gallifreyan, a male one at that -- the Doctor's Tenth regeneration to be specific. And now my brain's hopping with a new thought -- what if Girl In the Fireplace happened with Rose as Ten?

A Reinette/Rose(Ten) so to speak and I'm just charmed with the idea.

I keep thinking of The Doctor together with Rose(Ten) is transported to Reinette's room, the Doctor's both gentle and brusque and Rose(Ten) is being all kinds of gentle to Reinette and when the clockwork machine reveals itself being all scary and stuff the Doctor says, during the fight, "Even monsters have nightmares."

Young Reinette would ask, wide-eyed at the two men fighting the clockwork machine, "What do monsters have nightmares about?"

And Rose(Ten) answers with glee as she and the Doctor step back into the fireplace, "Us!"

Then the Doctor decides this is the perfect place as any for Rose(Ten) to learn about his (Rose still thinks of herself as a 'she') responsibilities as a Time Lord to sort of take point in this  thing while he goes about trying to find out what the warp drives are doing, he also assigns Jack and Mickey to check the whole ship.

So, when Rose(Ten) returns to Reinette's room, still expecting a young girl and is surprised by a young woman who she belatedly realizes is Reinette. Rose(Ten) becomes increasingly surprised when Reinette moves forward and touches him, when the servant calls for "Madame Poisson" Reinette she wastes no time and pulls Rose(Ten) for a kiss that astonishes Rose(Ten) and they stumble back into the fireplace and leaves Rose (Ten) gaping after her as she goes.

When Rose(Ten) arrives in the ship she's looking gobsmacked and the Doctor would say something like, "What happened to you?"

Rose(Ten) would answer, in a daze, "I think I was just snogged by Reinette Poisson." She looks at the Doctor, "I was snogged by a girl!"

The Doctor rolls his eyes until he recognizes the name and he's all, "The Uncrowned Queen of France Reinette Poisson?" And then he turns sulky, "I can't believe you snogged Madame du Pompadour!"

When Mickey and Jack return (with Arthur the horse in tow) the Doctor's still pouting and Rose(Ten) is being shifty.  Jack gets the full story out eventually and thinks its all funny, even slaps Rose(Ten) on the back, saying something about making her into a 51st century woman, man, person at last.

The Doctor just continues to sulk until Jack says, "Who're you more jealous of Reinette or Rose?"

"No one." He returns and dismisses the subject.

Basically it'll end almost same as the episode with Rose(Ten) coming through the mirror with Arthur the Horse and the Doctor, who was in another room battling the clockwork machines, returns to find her gone he glowers and calls Rose an idiot but you can see he's all cut-up about it and tries to re-establish warp connections with the mirror.

And this is where Rose(Ten) realizes she's fallen in love with Reinette and the moment the fireplace gets fixed she turns and invites Reinette to come with them but the result ends up in tragedy of course  when Rose(Ten) returns for Reinette only to fin that she just died. This is where Rose really understands the consequences of her life now as a time traveller, as a Time Lord to be --  people she loves dying as time goes on while she keeps on living forever.

....

Don't shun me! It's my brain!
