Thoughtcrimes is a direct to TV movie, a pilot for USA Networks . Freya McAllister (Navi Rawat) was a normal highschool student, until she started hearing voices in her head at the night of her prom (timing sucks), diagnosed as a schizophrenic, Freya was locked-up in a mental institution for nearly a decade before Dr. Michael Wells discovers her and takes her out of the institution and begins training her to control her telepathy.
Freya eventually learns that her recovery was sponsored by the National Security Agency and is partnered with Branden Dean (Joe Flannigan), he's sort of goofy, dedicated and also has a fancy ability of his own -- an eiditic memory. After a momentary freakout from Branden, they team up and fight crime.
I've seen this movie in HBO before but I wasn't paying attention despite Joe Flannigan's presence but
samdonne's Man, Interuppted changed my mind, it's a beautiful story about Freya and Brendan and their partnership. I really like the actress too.
It's a shame Thoughtcrimes wasn't picked-up as a series, it would have been interesting where they'd gone with the premise. Navi Rawat was lovely to watch as a traumatized and slowly recovering Freya but the ending didn't ring true for me. Freya seemed a wee bit too chipper and put together and smug at the end, of course they needed to wrap it up fast in case the series wasn't picked-up, which is, unfortunately the case. If the series was picked-up I think it would be different, I think we'll still be shown Freya's struggle to maintain her sanity. Now, I really want to read a Thoughtcrimes/Jake 2.0 crossover. It would be interesting how Freya and Jake would react to each other.
