DW: Evolutions of the Dalek
Apr. 30th, 2007 11:18 amI think this is the first Doctor Who two-parter I'm very meh about. They could have done so much more especially with the humanization of Dalek Sek, played Sek's change of heart in a way that's true to a Dalek's character and true to the change that's been happening to Sek. He could still be outright blood thirsty but with moments of revelations working through it.
Things I like:
- To borrow a term from
themonkeycabal watercooler Daleks! I just love how bitchy they are.
- Martha's lightning moment, she's really very intelligent in this and shows her Doctor-ish attitude. In fact Martha and Tallulah felt a tad bit like Doctor and Rose, especially when Martha went: 'Don't wander off!' and Tallulah still wandered off and saw how spectacularly beautiful New York was.
- Tallulah! Heh, especially with her going: 'What the hell are you doing?'
- Ten's explosive and shocking 'Kill me now! Do it! Do it!' it's a culmination of everything, of whatever he's done the Daleks always surviving and killing people he's helpless to protect.
- Ten's look at Martha when she said, "I suppose there's someone for everyone." He was clearly thinking of Rose (probably Romana too or Susan's grandma XD)
-The moment when the human/dalek/gallifreyans were murdered that was the Time War replayed again, that was Ten re-living the most scarring moment in his long life. It's also seems to be shifting Ten's perspective on genocide he was never for it but Ten seemed more willing to pull of a genocide (Doomsday/Runaway Bride) but seeing it like that it may help Ten move on from replaying the Time War mentality he's in as witnessed by Ten's offer to help Dalek Khan.
- The dark moment when Ten realized there's only one Dalek in the universe (again) now and he's confrontation with Khan. Okay, anyone beside me go: 'Khaaaan'?
- Martha refusing to obey Ten's direct order, you can see he's still in soldier mode there.
Things I didn't like:
- Solomon appealing to the Daleks, it felt very awkward and I don't think we're meant to cheer on when the Daleks went: EXTERMINATE! But the whole speech was awkward and if they hadn't killed Solomon they wouldn't be Daleks.
- Tallulah pushing Doctor/Martha. I'm not averse to the pairing, in fact I think I quite like it but I'm a bit miffed with Martha's infatuation with Ten. She's known him for the equivalent of a week and while I understand crushing on Ten, her attachment to Ten felt a little too fast.

cryptile's post on Dalek Sek's appeal
I tell you what I look forward to though: Paul Cornell's two-parter because since Father's Day he's always been my favorite!
