Can't sleep yet even though I *should* be sleeping. So, instead of sleeping I went ahead and watched! Multifandoms, ahoy!
Doctor Who
I finally, finally got around to sit myself down and write something about Classic Doctor Who through the very, very, very kind efforts of
livii and
vandovan.
Spearhead from Space
Before watching this I never really got the appeal of the Third Doctor, he seemed to me as too old and the clothes... well... and then I watched this and wow. I get it.
I really do. It's like, still pictures can't ever get the attractiveness of the Third Doctor -- in a way, he's kinda like Nine. First time I saw Eccleston in the pictures I was very 'meh' towards him and then I watched and he started to talk and smile and move and now Nine is the epitome of HOT.
It's the same way the Third Doctor is for me. He starts doing things like trying to runaway with his wheelchair and hugging his shoes and showering and stealing cars and clothes and talking and I just... he's so wonderful in motion!
But he's not the only amazing person there we also get UNIT, the Brigadier and Liz! I love Liz! She's so deliciously snarky and skeptical! And so, so wonderfully prickyly! She's like the beta version for Scully! Plus, I love the Brig's eyebrows and mustache and just the general way he handles the press! And, man, the first five minutes of UNIT and they come off as such an AUTHORITY even if they do screw up they still come off as an organization in the know, not just bumbling around (yes, Torchwood, I'm looking at you!).
I also love the Doctor's attempt to escape goes up in smoke! (Literally!) Hah! The Brigadier then agrees to bribe the Doctor with a car! How is that not awesome? I just want to hug everyone and squish them.
UNIT recruitment video
UNIT, how are you so awesome? I firmly believe you can wipe Torchwood's ass with your hands tied behind your back and eyes closed. Even if they do have the pterodactyl and Jack.
Invasion of the Dinosaurs
Hahaha oh, the clay dinosaurs!
But, gah, it depresses me to think that they have better special effects, story and acting than what Philippine TV currently has on air now.
Sarah Jane! You look so young! And have short hair! It's so strange!
The opening scene reminded me of 28 days later, very eerie. I love that the Doctor and Sarah gets caught and goes in for mug shots. I don't know why I find it so hilarious. And of course, the Brigadier rescues them! Plus, Benton is here!
Benton, who I've only met by virtue of
livii's Rose/Benton stories. I have discovered that Benton really is as awesome as livii wrote him to be. One of the reasons why I love Benton is how he takes things in stride! Like punching out the General, he apologizes, acknowledges that he will be court martialed and does it anyway! Go, Benton! Then he jokes about it and backtracks when the Brigadier arrives!
I don't know what to think of Yates though...
Tomb of the Cybermen
This, I finally got to watch in entirety after much cursing of the computer but it was so worth it! I like the Second Doctor but haven't fallen for him yet but I do like that he has a cape! The humans can have their coats and jackets and he'll have his cape! Hee.
One of the things that really struck me while watching this is... how modern the TotC was, setting and story wise. It doesn't feel as dated as I thought it would feel and yes, the SFX are cheesy but
then I look at Philippine TV and... let's just say the shows here beats Classic Who's cheese hands down.
I love Jaime! And I think I've never stared at a guy's legs as I have Jamie's... it's the skirt, it really emphasizes the legs. Plus, I love the way he snarks at the Doctor and even the evil scientist, especially the part where the scientist has them hostage and opens the hatch to let the Cybermen out and Jamie just randomly stands beside the evil scientist just to snark at him! That's dedication, I tell ya! Plus, I love
the way he grabs trash cans and is ready to clobber the Cybermen at will. I feel Rose and Jamie will get along just because of this.
I was ambivalent about Victoria from the start. She seemed so delicate but then as time went on she got her snark on too! Especially when she started snarking at the captain, then when she grabbed the bottle and started whaling on the Cybermen? I also love that she holds a gun and stands guard while the team slept. That says a lot about her character, I think.
But one of the best moments, I think that made me like the Second Doctor was how tender he was with Victoria and his words about remembering and grief. If he consciously tries to put the memories of his loved ones in the back of his mind, then what happened to Gallifrey and his people maybe torturing him. It's the one thing he can't let sleep at the back of his mind. He's always going to be reminded, wherever he goes, whoever he meets. It's no wonder Nine threw himself into his adventuring ways. It's his way of coping.
It's also interesting how Doctor Who wasn't just black and white even then. Even the 'evil' people weren't really evil, they had an agenda of their own and had deliusions of grandeur but they weren't *just* evil. On a side note, when the evil scientist went on about being the Master, I really thought he was the Master. Utopia has programmed me too well.
The issue with the Cybermen is survival and the lengths they will go through to ensure it, considering the Dalek's fate in the current series and even the Doctor's I wonder how Nine or Ten will take to these Cybermen? Another issue with the Cybermen is emotions, they seem so very, very afraid of them that to them, the only solution was to remove it all together. Cold reason and logic over heart. Just as they chance being frozen forever just because they want to survive, forever.
Dresden Files
I really like this series, I think it was
thassalia who mentioned that Dresden Files was an updated throwback to the 80s detective stories and I think that's a very good description to the series. I also love Murphy. She's so prickly.
Yes, I kinda do have a THING for prickly characters!
Blood Ties
I've seen the four episodes and I like it so far and I love Victoria's glasses. Henry worked a lot better than I thought. I wonder if there's any crossover between Dresden Files and Blood Ties? They both seem like a logical choice to crossover. Plus, I'm sure Victoria and Murphy will get along well!:)

Oh, and hey! Guys, mosey on over to
rose_lives! Rose Tyler, Girl Adventurer ficathon is up! There are some fabulous stories there! Speaking of, I also had a drabble some time ago posted here:
Fire and Gold
Doctor Who, Rose Tyler, G
She dreamed sometimes of fire and gold and singing and death
It's about Rose and supposedly my thoughts about the Bad Wolf and how it affects/ed her but it went no where so, I just posted it up. But I'm happy with how it turned out. There are some stories that are really short and others that just goes on and on.
It's no secret that I was pretty unhappy with the way RTD handled, or rather, didn't handle the fall out from that experience because you can't just brush away the fact that Rose had the whole Time Vortex running through her head. She had all that phenomenal power and we're supposed to believe it hasn't affected her in some way? I don't think so. She touched something that day and that's going to leave a mark.
In a way, I do like that Rose is in a parallel world. It means her canon's closed 'til such time RTD decides to bring her back, we can imagine a bunch of stuff Rose is doing without fear of getting jossed.
