on characters and gen

One last Rose speculation before I move on to other things. Here's a bit of unpopular opinion. I find I'm having an adverse reactions to all the: 'Yay, Rose hasn't moved on' reactions as much as the 'OMG, Rose blech' reactions.
I don't want Rose to be sad/broken because she isn't with the Doctor. I don't want it, I want Rose to be doing all sort of amazing things in the parallel-verse.
I can see her carrying this sort of sadness with her and as I've become a sort of Gen/Bob fan these days I don't want to buy the interpretation that the only reason why she's looking so sad is because she missed the Doctor.
She misses the Doctor, that's a given but I want her reason for being there to be *more*. I'm actually hoping the rumor I heard via
violetisblue is true because that's something I would be interested to see, and not just in the Bad Wolf sense. The reason why season 1 worked for me is because they had this coherent storyline that you knew was building to something. S3 felt that way until the cracktastic 'I believe in Fairies the Doctor' happened.
So, Rose returning to the original universe because she wants to return to the Doctor feels, well, shallow to me. But if Rose returns, looking for the Doctor for a specific reason, that would be fantastic.
violetisblue mentioned that Rose looked liked she'd been through a war, and you know what? That's how it does look. Even Behind the Sofa seems to think the look she had on was ominous:
That's the sort that would bring shivers up my spine. The hint that there's something coming, something even more dangerous that would compel Rose to travel universes. That in her world, there is a bigger threat, one she and her Torchwood can't stave off and if what I've heard of Davros and seen of the Daleks in the trailer means that the Daleks are coming or is already in her world, that she needs help fighting them off then I will be in awe. This is what I want from her.
This brings me to thinking on how much I've become a gen fan. These days, it's not enough for me to read about two characters in love, I want something more. I want casefiles and adventures and in between that, character moments that mean something. I believe
cofax7 called it Gen/Bob. It's character driven story with a gen plot, it's a romance with a gen plot. It's quite possible that this is why I'm so smitten with Life. Because it has this fascinating characters and then have them solving cases all the while going through personal things. And then, of course, fabulous partnershippery moments.

A few weeks back TV Guide had a poll and placed Charlie Crews in the nerd category. I boggled too. He can be a dork, yes. But a nerd? Did these people even watch the show? Fortunately
firthgal has come to the rescue by showing how badass he can be. Also, how he can be a dork. Plus, another picspam about Charlie letting his hair down, so to speak, with added Dani!
Speaking of Dani, thestar has an article about Life up, featuring Sarah Shahi here .
The article addresses the issue of Sarah's image before joining Life, and all I can say it's about time Sarah's finally being taken seriously. Most of the interviews I read were all annoying and always mentioned her role on L Word which would have been alright if it wasn't obvious it was all for the titillation of their male readership. Even that one televised interview with Carson Daly incensed me so *much*. Sarah was there to promote Life but all he was interested in was that Sarah kissed girls and when Life was finally mentioned it was the last two minutes of the show. Argh.

But it was still a surprise and slightly haunting; like the Doctor she looks older and having run the moment back (a few times), I’ve decided that’s sadness and regret in her eyes, the look of someone who knows that there’s far greater dangers ahead and that it’s not time for her reunion with the Doctor just yet. It’s the kind of moment which simply didn’t happen in the earlier series – Mawdryn Undead did not look forward or lay seeds for The Five Doctors – and to be honest previously in these new series. Where once a name or word would thread through the series, here its ghosts from the past, is more compelling.
