I'm a bit hesitant to dive back into the Song of Ice and Fire while it is a very good fantasy series I find the unrelenting grimness hard to push through. Its the same problem I had with BSG, one of the biggest reasons why I couldn't get into that show.
I like my darkness mixed in with whimsy, hope and a good helping of crack (its really not a wonder why I got into Life, huh?) ; too much of the dark without any kind of relief makes me twitch. On the other hand, I'm curious about the later books.

Remember the Life fic I'm working on? The Ted-centric one? Yeah, still working on it. Why the heck are Ted and Olivia not cooperating? I want to finish this fic but neither character are cooperating. First, it was Olivia, now its Ted who's being stubborn. *pouts*
Amanda, on the other hand is cooperating rather well. A little too well.
--
Hey, you know what's also hard to write? A crazy but getting better sociopath protagonist. Yeah, why do I do this to myself?

Ted met Amanda Puryer in London. Of course. Gray, foggy London. During a layover. Sometimes the universe was just plain mean.
Amanda Puryer reminded Ted of a cat where Olivia reminded Ted of sunshine. Olivia's smiles blinded Ted with a radiance that made him think of picnics and lush green grass. But Olivia sent him away with tears, a kiss and finally a whispered, "Goodbye, Ted."
And here he was in London and there was Amanda Puryer stepping out of the tube, she stood out of the crowd walking fast, talking fast and always with that satisfied expression on her face. The expression was familiar. It was the same expression he saw in the mirror before the law caught him making a mistake. Puryer blinked when she saw him, surprise on her face. It seemed genuine, her surprise then the surprise faded into her default expression.
"Why," she drawled, "Mr. Earley."
"Ms. Puryer."
"Weren't you in Spain with your Olivia?"
Ted couldn't help the frown and the tug of gravity as his shoulders fell. "I was."
The rise of her eyebrows was her reply and she took out her cigarette case.
"Uh, I don't think you can--"
Amanda lit the cigarette and took a drag then blew the smoke above Ted's head. "Well, c'est la vie."
