Birthdays and fandom histories
Jun. 28th, 2006 02:42 amBirthday's come and gone but guess what brought me to post? That's write, the Wank that Ate the HP Fandom (
musesfoolTM).
I have just spent hours online reading the most fascinating, scary psycho-profile of, what I could only describe as a sociopath. By way of
astridv, behold:
It's a brilliant, gripping, well-researched saga of one woman's bid to enter the inner sanctum of the Harry Potter elite through well-planned machiavellian moves. I think its the best piece of journalistic writing I've ever read.
And it left me a pretty good impression how whacked some sectors of the HP fandom are. I think throughout the whole time I was reading it, my mouth was agape and my eyebrows sky high in disbelief.
I've never heard of Ms. Scribe before this but I've certainly heard of Fandom_Scruples and the Charity_Wank, both left bad taste in my mouth. But it was all periphery since I'm more of a lurker than anything. But, man, this did a great job of luring me to post again.
It's just -- the sheer effort and insanity that went into this is mind boggling and it really made me more cautious about the mob mentality. It's not that I'm new to that, I've been witnessed to it happening in real life with real violent consequences but to see it play out in meticulous detail made me sick to my stomach.
I'm sure all parties caught in this storm feel bad and my sympathies to them.

In other news, it seems like ajhalluk will be leaving LJ land, I haven't commented on his LJ much but I've always enjoyed his insightful essays and fanfics, I'll be sad to see him go.
